Row over Sunday parking fee plan

CHURCH leaders have hit out at plans to charge drivers to park in Fareham town centre on Sundays.

Officials from churches in the town believe it could reduce congregations and tear the heart out of the community life of the churches.

Fareham Borough Council is looking into introducing fees for the town centre car parks on Sundays and bank holidays between 9am and 5pm.

Anne Butcher, parish secretary for St Peter and St Paul CE Church in Osborn Road, said: "At the moment, most of our congregation park in the car park next to the civic offices on Sunday mornings. If they had to pay, it might put them off coming to church.

"People may not be able to stay for a chat after the morning service if they had to pay for the car park, which would cut down on the community life of the church."

A report on the proposed Fareham Town Centre Parking Strategy states: "As the financial climate for the next three years continues to tighten, it is important that services such as car parks explore every opportunity to increase income."

The report suggests a flat all-day fee to park on Sundays and bank holidays.

The council's executive will discuss the parking proposals at a meeting on July 28.

Yet another way to exploit ordinary people. Nice one. Good to know that, when we face an economic downturn, local government is right behind us, just like a mugger

Southampton City Center Church's had the same problem a few years ago ,but they got the council to not charge until noon on Sundays and Bank Holidays ,not the best idea ,but better than nothing .So lobby your council and councilors remember they work on your behalf not the other way round.

So where is the 'magicians' power now then?

Perhaps in the scriptures it says 'Thou shalt come over to mine on Sunday and thou shalt be paying to park your devils carriage and I will not bung a few shillings in thou pocket to do so but I still expect thee to dip in thou pocket to drop a fiver in mine begging bowl nonetheless '

When is the world going to realise that Alice in Wonderland, Harry Potter and the Bible are just storys made up to scare the s4!7 out of naughty kids? Its not real guys!

If it is then deduct the parking fee from the begging bowl contribution and see if Mickey Mouse maketh it up through divine intervention.

I agree with the sentiments, but it should be "thy pocket".

Did you even read the story? Or is this just your canned response to any story that contains the word 'church' somewhere?
