THE Mayor of Romsey had the honour of crowning the town's new Carnival Queen and her two attendants.

Karen Dunleavey performed the ceremony during Saturday's Beggars Fair. Crowds gathered in the Cornmarket to watch the tiaras being placed on the heads of the queen, Erin Wood and her attendants, Becky Wheeler-Osman and Hennie Pile.

"They looked absolutely lovely and were very excited. They seemed thrilled to be chosen and I am sure they will undertake their duties with pride," said Mrs Dunleavey.

Sunday is the start of Romsey Carnival week with a parade of floats and walking exhibits through the town's streets. The procession will assemble at Romsey Industrial Estate and set off for the town centre at 2.30pm.

It is due to travel along Greatbridge Road, Duttons Road, Station Road, Latimer Street, The Hundred, Palmerston Street, Broadwater Road, Bell Street and the Market Place before disbanding in Church Street.

Romsey Old Cadets Carnival Showband and the Second New Forest North Stanley's Own Scout Band is included in the line-up.

Carnival spokesman, Pete Lomer, said the committee was hoping spectators would line the streets to watch the parade "So far, entries are up on last year, with several visiting royal parties' indicating they will be taking part."

The committee is inviting all the local village carnival royal parties' to take part. It is understood that there will be a collection of old military vehicle taking part and possibly the Royal British Legion Motor Cycle Club.

"The committee hopes to arrange for the military vehicles to be on display in the Cornmarket after the procession," said Mr Lomer, who added that rolling road closures will be in place during the procession.

Carnival bosses hope that changing the parade day from Saturday evening to a Sunday afternoon will attract more entries in the procession and draw in even bigger crowds. The move was made following a disappointing turnout at last year's summer parade.
