Steam show has high hopes after monsoon of 2007
EYES will be turning to the skies when the Netley Marsh Steam and Craft Show gets into full swing. But they won't necessarily be looking to see if the storm clouds which put such a damper on last year's event are gathering again.
They will be seeking out some of the fearless skydivers from Britain's armed forces, with a different group dropping in on each day.
The show, which has supported local charities for more than 30 years, is one of the most popular in the area and it runs from next Friday, July 25, to Sunday, July 27.
All set to fall from the sky and then glide gracefully down to the arena with their parachutes on the opening day are the Royal Artillery parachute team, The Black Knights, followed on Saturday by the Princess of Wales's Royal Regiment freefall parachute team, The Tigers.
Completing the illustrious line-up on the Sunday will be the The Parachute Regiment's team, The Red Devils.
The show is being given a further military feel by a re-enactment of the ancient battle of Netley Marsh by the Saxon/Viking Re-enactment Society, depicting an event that changed the course of British history. It was fought in 508 when the Saxons Cerdic and Cynric, having landed at Fawley, met the British king, Natanleod.
In the second arena, the Wessex Bird of Prey Rescue will display the skills of the wild bird, and the Dog Agility Display Team will show the fun and ability of their pets.
Entertainment for the very young will be provided by Winnie the Witch and Punch and Judy, while a bike and motorcycle trials display by the Waterside Junior Motor Cycle Club is set to thrill all age groups
Historic machinery, some driven by steam engines will show how things used to be done.
In the craft centre this year, there will be up to 60 stalls offering a wide range of hand-crafted goods, including paintings, needlework, jewellery, toys, and ornaments.
Arrow Management Ltd will be running the trade area, which has the promise of a larger number of stalls and a wider range of goods on offer. A new feature this year will be a farmers' food hall.
there will be plenty of steam engines, vintage vehicles, and motorcycles, tractors and agricultural equipment, models, stationary engines to admire and reminisce over.
The majestic heavy horses will be on parade in their finery both Saturday and Sunday of the show and the B.Coles & Sons funfair will be there, too.
On site caravanning and camping for the weekend will be accompanied by evening music, a hog roast and bar.
