Postman Scottie was first class

FORTY villagers greeted a postman to say thanks and goodbye as he finished delivering his last letter in Crawley after 15 years pounding the rural lanes.

David Scottie' Scott, 65, from Winnall, worked for Royal Mail in Winchester for 37 years.

Before that he spent 12 years with the Royal Green Jackets, serving in Northern Ireland, Malaya, Indonesia, Thailand, Germany and Cyprus.

After joining Royal Mail, he worked for Datapost before becoming a postman in Hursley.

He switched to Crawley in the early 1990s, and soon became popular with residents and also their pets.

He said: "There were no vicious dogs on the round, and I used to keep a few biscuits in the van for them.

"Quite a few began to know what the van sounded like and would run down to the gate when I arrived to get their treat!"

Mr Scott said Crawley was a difficult round to learn as the properties had names instead of numbers, and the lanes had no names at all.

He added that he had no idea how many letters he delivered while working for Royal Mail, but his daily round-which also included a few homes in northern Littleton-stretched to some 220 properties.

On his final day, last month, Felicity Gillibrand, one of the residents who gathered to say farewell, said: "He will be greatly missed by everyone - including all the village dogs!

"Scottie gave invaluable service to the community, and we wish him a very happy retirement."

Mr Scott added: "They gave me a good send-off and it was a total surprise, but they've always been very nice people. I've now got all of their retirement cards with me at home."

He is yet to make firms plans for his retirement, but hopes to enjoy some holidays.
