WINCHESTER FESTIVAL OPENING CONCERT

Just as a good party is launched with a bang, then so a good arts festival needs a grand opening to make its mark, and the Winchester Festival has learned over its 11-year existence that a large-scale concert in the Cathedral is perhaps the best way to do this.
Maureen Lipman kept the Winchester Festival audience convulsed with laughter throughout her conversation with John Miller in the Guildhall. One of the great raconteurs of show-business, her stories ranged from Zuckerman the tortoise and Barbra Streisand, to her various encounters with the Royal Family and Tony and Cherie Blair, with hilariously accurate mimicry of such luminaries as David Frost.
Gavin Esler is well qualified to talk about world politics, and those of North America in particular. He was the BBC's Washington Correspondent and Chief North America Correspondent from 1989 to 1997, and he currently co-hosts Newsnight on BBC 2. But can he be taken seriously as a novelist?
GIRLS from the area will get their thinking caps on as they take part in a week of technology events at IBM's headquarters in Hursley this week (July 7 to 11).
