Packaging waste is growing problem
SIR - I wonder how many other householders were astounded to read in Winchester City Council's latest edition of Perspectives that "the council's alternate bin collection has proved to be a great hit with residents"?
Recycling rates may well have increased, but the real challenge for the city council is to press for the reduction of superfluous packaging, whether it can be recycled or not.
As to the advice to "double wrap all meat and fish scraps before disposal", surely that will encourage the use of even more plastic bags (or similar) which will never degrade in landfill.
The fact is that weekly refuse collections were originally introduced to interrupt the life cycle of the house fly, and that to safeguard public health, household bins should be emptied each week.
