City popular with tourists but struggling to draw new outlets
SIR - After reading your front-page article, City "still popular", as traders quit, I would be extremely interested to know from which city opticianJim Sawyer managed to procure his pair of "rose-tinted" spectacles?
Are they on a special offer "two for the price of one?"
Perhaps, as chairman of the North Hampshire Chamber of Commerce and Industry, he is somehow getting Winchester confused with other towns within his area of jurisdiction?
Is Mr. Sawyer really describing the city in which I have resided, worked and played for a period of almost 45 years? If so, I must admit that I personally find it very difficult to recognise.
I would readily admit that the city is still a major attraction regarding tourism but can he honestly indicate that the city is still a big attraction to new shopping outlets?
Do we really need another jeweller or another restaurant in the city?
Maybe a new clothing retailer would be beneficial because if Mr Sawyer did a little local research, he would soon ascertain that a huge number of residents actually shop outside the city for their clothes.
Sussex Stationers will be a sad loss to the High Street.
The food and drink outlets cannot really go wrong in Winchester where I witness an enormous amount of support from the "silver-hair brigade" throughout the week but there is very little evidence of full shopping bags.
I suspect that if you took the tourist and the retired element out of the equation, many of these outlets would also struggle to survive?
A Mundy,
Woodgreen Road,
Harestock.

The big problems are Winchester's one way system, pay and display car parks, Hitleresque traffic wardens and the armay of beggars and vagrants turning visitors off. Many of these problems were caused by the previous Lib Dem Council, but the Tory administration has now had over a year to get to grips with the situation but has done absolutley zilch!

I've heard that only Oxford St in London charges more for shop floor rent. Is this true?
