SIR - Mr Thornber, leader of HCC, never seems to tire of defending the accusations of extravagance by his administration. He certainly has had lots of practice.

SIR - In your article on county councillors' expenses (Chronicle, July 3), you quoted the opinion of Mrs Christine Melsom that a register of attendance at full council and committee would quickly identify "the hard workers and the slackers". In fact it would do no such thing.

Aldi more welcome in current climate?

SIR - Could it be that the delay in starting the Waitrose store in Weeke (Chronicle, July 10) is because they have been hit by the credit crunch and are shelving the project, like so many builders are doing at present?

SIR - Your report, June 19, that the RHCH was running at 94 per cent occupancy throughout last winter (max recommended 85 per cent) alarms me as a retired ENT surgeon.

SIR - I trust the landlords who own the shop that Sussex Stationers traded from are duly pleased with themselves, being that another worthwhile retailer has had to quit Winchester due to ludicrous rents.
