Andover tax office to close
STAFF at HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) have been told that the Andover office will close in the winter.
A total of 50 offices across England will shut in a bid to save money.
Mark Serwotka, of the Public and Commercial Services Union, said: "This announcement is part of a crude drive to slash jobs and cut costs which will leave HMRC unable to deliver quality public services.
"We will be campaigning to keep as many offices open as possible, as job cuts are already damaging the ability of HMRC to function and undermining public confidence."
Unions have warned hundreds of jobs could be lost but the service is promising there will be no compulsory redundancies.
When the issue of closing offices was raised in Parliament last month, the minister, financial secretary to the treasury, Jane Kennedy, said: "There will be short term costs associated with closing any office as well as specific estate savings from that closure.
"HMRC is restructuring its entire business operation in order to achieve value for money saving and customer service improvements required by the end of the comprehensive review period in March 2011."
