Union urges passengers to reject ticket office closure plans

The National Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers (RMT) are encouraging South West Train (SWT) passengers from Whitchurch and Overton to reject plans to cut ticket office opening times.

Passengers are being urged by RMT to raise their objections with Passenger Focus, the watchdog which has the power to change the plans before the cut off date, 5 August.

According to the RMT there will be 114 stations affected by SWT's proposed cuts and that the affected stations have seen a 27 per cent increase in passengers going through their doors in the last year.

The present opening times at Whitchurch are 5.35am until 12.44pm Monday to Friday, and Saturday from 6am until 10.25am.

With the changes the ticket office would open from 6am until 11.15 on Monday to Friday and close on Saturday.

The times at Overton station will change from 6am until 10.10am to 7am until 9.20am Monday to Friday.

In a statement released by SWT they have said that recent studies carried out by themselves and Passenger Focus indicated that 91 per cent of people queuing in a ticket office could have bought their tickets from a Ticket Vending Machine (TVM). The statement added that the suggested changes followed months of in depth research into ticket sales at each station.
