‘Borough’s lack of carnival support’ - claim
DISQUIET at a perceived failure by Test Valley Borough council to support the new-style Andover Carnival was evident at the latest meeting of Andover Councillors' Forum.
The meeting in the Guildhall only attracted a dozen members of the public who were restricted to just 30 minutes' question time but this issue rose to the top.
Ivan Collins, said he had attended the event to watch his granddaughter in the procession but was unhappy at the organisation in the town centre.
"Is this because Test Valley refused to pay £4,000 to put up barriers?" he asked.
Another resident, Peter Field, asked why the council had organised a music event the previous week but didn't see fit to support the local carnival'.
Forum chairman Carl Borg-Neal said they needed to check whether or not the carnival organisers had made a formal request for the money.
Councillor Chris Lynn, said: "When the event had been run by the Andover Round Table they had the expense of £4,000 for the barriers and decided they could no longer run it."
But he felt the squeeze caused by lack of barriers resulted in many of the participants in this year's event failing to reach the end of the procession route in the High Street.
